2D Shapes

Read this article to gain a basic understanding of the common 2D shapes!




Circle

In a circle, any point you can think of that is on the side of a circle have the same distance to the center of the circle. We call this distance the radius of the circle. Examples of circles include wheels, pizzas, round plates, etc.


Rectangle

a rectangle has four sides and four angles, each angle is 90 degrees. The sides that are right across from each other are of the same length. Examples include brick, TV, cardboard, etc.


Square

Similar to a rectangle, a square has four sides and four 90-degrees angles. The difference is that all four sides of a square have the same length.


Triangle

Any 2D-shape that has three straight sides and three angles can be referred to as a triangle. When you go on a road trip with your parents, you will probably see a lot of road signs in the shape of triangle on your way!


Pentagon

A 2D shape that has five sides and five angles. This list can go on – a 2D shape with six sides and six angles is called a hexagon, a 2D shape with seven sides and seven angles is called a heptagon, and a 2D shape with eight sides and eight angles is called an Octagon.
