AI Ethics: Addressing Bias within ML

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to progress, the question of ethics has popped up. AI functions on machine learning, you may ask yourself, what is that? Well, Machine learning is when you provide the program with data and information and while that may seem normal, it can cause some prejudices in these programs.

For example, using the data of high crime rates from a certain ethnic group can cause AI softwares to come up with biases against these groups of people. When AI systems are asked to make a decision based on biased data, they may discriminate against certain groups which reinforces stereotypes. Imagine AI software used in healthcare to schedule medical appointments; if it incorporates biased data, it might systematically deny people of color access to necessary medical care. This not only affects individual health outcomes but also furthers health inequalities.

Or what if someone comes across a biased algorithm in hiring processes? It could favor someone from a privileged background. it could unfairly disadvantage qualified candidates from underrepresented groups. This not only limits opportunities for these individuals but also deprives organizations of diverse talent and perspectives.
