What is the reasoning behind the five tips that the World Health Organization announced to stop the spread of COVID-19? Read to find out!
1. Stay home!
You may have heard many people online, on the TV, or the radio saying this phrase. Why is it important to stay at home?
COVID-19 is a virus that is spread between people interacting with each other. Many studies, according to Medical News Today, believe that the virus was first found in bats and was transmitted to a domestic animals. Then, the virus transmitted to a person. However, what specific animal first started the spread of the virus was still unclear. This virus is easily passed from one person to another since this virus is airborne, which means that when a person breathes near a person who has the virus in their body, they will most likely get it as well. Many researchers are still studying this topic. But, it is clear that if everyone is wandering outside, then the virus will have more people to attack and spread even further. So, what everyone should do to slow down the spread of the virus is... stay home!
2. Keep a safe distance!
The scary thought is that nobody knows when a person has the virus in their body. When the virus goes into a person's body, it takes around a week for the person to start noticing some symptoms (signs that show a type of sickness). Some signs are dry coughing, fever, and having a hard time breathing. Before these symptoms begin showing, the virus may have already spread to other people if the person made contact with others. Then, it's too late and the virus will keep spreading from one person to another...
Some people, like me, may have food deliveries arriving at their houses. Stay at least six feet away from anyone, even people delivering food to you! Ask them to leave your food on your doorstep and remember to thank them!
3. Wash your hands often!
You may not see any germs, but they are actually everywhere. They are on your desk, clothes, and especially your hands! Our hands touch many objects during the day even when we don't notice it. When we wash our hands well with soap for at least 20 seconds (according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the germs on our hands will disappear. We should follow this rule seriously, especially during the spread of COVID-19 since germs can go into our bodies very quickly when our hands touch our face, eyes, mouth, and nose.
4. Cover your cough and sneezes!
One way germs spread is when people don't cover their coughs or sneezes with a tissue. When a person coughs or sneezes, mucus droplets appear in the air. Then, the mucus droplets go on a surface such as a desk. We can't see mucus droplets, but these are actually flu germs! When someone else touches the surface where the germs are, they could get sick.
Ways to cover your cough or sneeze: Use a tissue or your elbow when a tissue is not near you.
5. Call when you feel sick!
This goes back to the first tip and second tip! This virus spreads from one person to another, so it is important to keep a distance from others since they may be sick but not have the symptoms yet. When you don't feel so good and have dry coughs, a fever, or spend a hard time breathing, it is important to call a hospital close to you to schedule an appointment. This will allow you to spend less time in the hospital wandering around and having contact with other people. When you are on your way to the hospital, make sure to wear a mask to help keep others safe.
Follow these rules the World Health Organization released to the public and help stop the spread of COVID-19! We can do it!
