Borderline Personality Disorder

According to the Mayo Clinic, borderline personality disorder is a mental health disorder that affects the way one thinks and feels about oneself and others, including self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and a pattern of unstable relationships. Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder:

  • Intense fear of abandonment

  • A pattern of unstable intense relationship

  • Rapid changes in self-identity and self-image that include shifting goals and values, and seeing oneself as bad or as if one does not exist at all

  • Periods of stress-related paranoia and loss of contact with reality

  • Impulsive behavior such as reckless driving, binge eating, etc

  • Wide mood swings

  • Ongoing feelings of emptiness

  • Inappropriate and intense anger

Although the causes of borderline personality disorder are not completely clear, researchers believe it has something to do with genetics and brain abnormalities. Certain personality disorders or other mental health disorders may be hereditary, a risk factor for those with borderline personality disorder. In addition, certain areas of the brain control emotion, including impulsivity and aggression, and certain chemicals such as serotonin regulate mood. Another factor of borderline personality disorder is brain damage or brain abnormalities.

There are a lot of complications associated with borderline personality disorder, including repeated job changes or losses, self-injury, frequent hospitalizations, attempted or completed suicide, etc. It is always important to see a doctor when one has fantasies or mental images about hurting oneself or has other suicidal thoughts.
