What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process in which green plants use sunlight to make their own food. “Photo” means light and “synthesis” means putting together. Plants need food to survive just like humans and animals do. Green plants make their own through photosynthesis
What Does Photosynthesis Require?
Photosynthesis requires sunlight, chlorophyll, water, and carbon dioxide. Chlorophyll is the green pigment located inside plant cells. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil.
What Happens During Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is able to begin when the chlorophyll present in the plant absorbs energy from sunlight. This light energy is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This oxygen is released from the leaves of the plant into the atmosphere. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are used to form glucose (nutrients) for the plant. The plants use some of the glucose while storing the rest. The oxygen is released into the air.
In More Detailed Terms:
Photosynthesis occurs in two stages known as Light Dependent Reactions and the Calvin Cycle. Light Dependent reactions occur in plant cells and only when light is available. This reaction converts light energy (sunlight) into chemical energy. The Calvin Cycle can take place without light but requires carbon dioxide and energy created during the first stage using light.
Why Is Photosynthesis Important?
Photosynthesis is vital to all life on Earth because it keeps plants alive. This is because almost all living things depend on plants for food or on other organisms that consume plants. Photosynthesis is also important because it allows plants to produce oxygen. Humans and other animals need this oxygen to breathe.
In simple terms:
Carbon dioxide + water are transformed through sunlight into glucose and oxygen.
